Clicker Training

Most pet stores carry small little devices called clickers. They click, hence the name. This can be used as yet another aid in training. You give your puppy a command (and maybe even a hand signal) then click the clicker. It’s all about making connections and associations for your puppy – making neural pathways for him to follow.

Walking Your Puppy

Leashes aren’t fun for your puppy. He’s a wolf, remember? Wolves roam. They wander and smell and explore. However, as the alpha dog and the master, you need to be in control of situation.

That’s where walking and leashes come in handy. This keeps him contained to a certain radius. You can let him explore within that radius and keep him and the general populace safe from his rampaging puppy instincts.

Before you start, choose your weapon well. Buy weapon, of course, I mean leash and collar.

Leashes come in different weights and lengths depending on the size of your dog. It doesn’t matter much but keep in mind the size of your puppy and how far you want him to be able to roam. As far as collars go, there are several different types. Do NOT use a choke collar – too many risks involved. You can use a simple around the neck sort of collar or you can invest in a leader (which goes around the head and snout) or a harness which takes the pressure off of the neck.

It’s really a matter of preference but do use common sense. Don’t put a heavy weight leash on a tea-cup poodle puppy.

Also, unless this walking time is meant to be for elimination purposes, try to make sure that puppy poops before leaving the house. Otherwise, you’ll end up toting around a bag full of nasty whenever you walk your puppy.

Gross.

But do remember to take a bag with you for accidents. Better safe than sorry.

Now, this first maiden voyage will be a short one that’s mostly stop and go but be patient. This is going to take a lot of practice to get right.

Don’t expect puppy to know how to do this naturally because this is really going against his ancestry.

Step 1: Choose a side for him to walk on (either left of you or right of you). It doesn’t really matter which side you choose but be consistent and keep that as his side from now on.

Step 2: When he pulls and fights (which he will), immediately stop and make him sit. When he sits still, praise him and keep walking. Repeat this process (stop, sit, praise) every time he fights. I told you this first walk was going to be short and stuttering, right?

Step 3: If he wants to wander within the radius of the leash (without pulling or fighting) let him.

Step 4: When encountering other dogs and people (especially children), remain in control of your puppy. If he’s freaking out, stop and let the others pass you. Reassure your puppy so he doesn’t think that the strangers are going to attack him.
